Career in Data Science

Disciplines of Mathematics, Statistics, Computer science, and Information technology contributes to their theories and techniques in the establishment of the field of Data Science. The establishment of Data science as an independent term is a recent phenomenon. Earlier, it was used as an alternative for the term Computer Science. Interaction of data with certain processes and representation of data through various program forms the study area of computer science. The manipulation, storage, and communication of digital information require proficient use of algorithms. Computer Science facilitates the usage of these algorithms. A Computer Scientist learns to design software systems and gains in-depth knowledge of the theory of computation.

Knowledge of data helps you ask appropriate questions and derive insights from big data, it teaches you how to manipulate data sets and allows you to gain the skill of visualization of your own findings in a convincing manner. A well-designed course trains you about how to handle data science tools. The tools which build the foundation are Mathematical tools and computational tools. The in-depth understanding of these tools and proficiency in handling these tools helps one in suggesting data-driven solutions in the business.

Mathematical and applied are two aspects and to learn data science, one has to gain an understanding of both of these aspects. Probability, statistics, and machine learning come under the scope of Mathematical aspect while applied aspects help you gain knowledge of data science, languages which includes Python, MATLAB, JAVA, SQL. It also helps gives you an understanding of the usage of the specific toolkit. The applied aspects let you into the real data world. Training in a data science course gives you expertise in the collection of big data as well as its analysis and cleansing. This training assists you in executing analysis of big data on a large scale. It also trains you on how to communicate your findings in a compelling manner.

The term which shares a very close association with data science is Machine learning. Machine learning deals with algorithms to draw patterns out of data and to make predictions. For this purpose of making predictions and drawing out patterns, machine learning employed methods of data modeling. While making predictions, machine learning trains predictive models by making use of tagged data. The awareness of ground truth gives rise to observations which qualify themselves as tagged data. This task of making prediction includes training of models to enable them on how to prefigure the unknown data from tagged data. The training of models can be done by employing various methods. While some of these methods are simple, like regression, the others are complex, like neural nets. While discovering patterns out of data, machine learning tries to look for some patterns or search for some data associations in a situation where tagged data is absent. While there are more categories to machine learning, these two comprises of the core categories.

Struggle of Women In Tech Marketing Jobs

Gender Pay Gap

The study conducted by Glassdoor on 25 leading tech companies shows a remarkable gender pay gap. In most of these companies, men are reported to get a higher salary package in comparison to the female employees (with similar skills and experience) working in the same capacity. The difference in median annual base pay of men and women working in leading IT companies ranges from +$4,192 to -$25,104, which shows a yawning gap in salaries wherein the boys club of Silicon Valley continues to bag the lion share. Although, at entry-level the gender pay gap is not visible but in the course of rise through the ranks, the women are left behind.

Fit to Follow, not to Lead

According to the latest Grant Thornton International Business Report, the share of women in senior management roles globally is only 24 percent. Women are considered to be good for retail or background services but not for high designations making big and impacting decisions. When it comes to promotion or assigning a profile with many responsibilities, women are not included in the candidature. Using the shield of “with all other responsibilities that women have, they should be given easy work”, the women in tech marketing jobs are not given the opportunity to come up.

Sexual Harassment

Heidi Roizen, co-founder and CEO of software company T/Maker, was working on a deal with Sr. Vice President of a leading PC manufacturer, in 1985. The deal failed because, Roizen did not respond to the lecherous advances by the senior executive during a meeting over dinner for some paperwork. After a long time, she has shared this experience on her blog. Although this is one case to cite but if this happened with a CEO, the probability for women in a hierarchy can be easily estimated. Tech valley is not an exception in considering women as a sex object.

Culture UN-fit

The “she” candidature is kept on lower priority with a plea “not a culture fit”. This jargon lacks a clear definition but has certainly reduced the number of women hired for tech profiles. Since this is a totally self-created criterion with no standard or transparency, chauvinist decision makers conveniently play this card in gender biased hiring.

Social Prejudice

The “Society Earth” has some widely accepted prejudices about men and women, across the borders. Few of them are critical obstacles on the path of success for women in tech jobs. According to social norms, “Technology is thought to be a man’s strong point”. For instance, in May 2009, Dell unveiled a new website with the classic “make it pink” conviction. It is believed, that women, in general, have no worthy knowledge about technology and buy gadgets or laptops solely on the basis of their looks. Social norms relating to women’s intelligence in science and mathematics also curb their growth in the IT sector. It is said that women cannot take crucial decisions or handle pressures of deadlines. To add, people think that the Silicon Valley is extremely dynamic, and for a woman to cope up this speed is an unrealistic challenge.

Advantage With CISSP Training

CISSP stands for Certified Information System Security Professional, and is a course in computing. But not just any kind of computing. This kind of computing specializes in security, primarily that of federal departments.

It is a sort of universal format for governmental security systems, meaning that many different departments use it, and it must be constantly updated in order to stay ahead of the security game, so to speak. This is a very prestigious qualification and with successful completion of CISSP courses you can apply for jobs in governmental security and the like, providing a great service for your government whilst having a very well paid job.

Obviously one of the key aspects of any job that one looks out for is job security. With more and more key systems moving online, in both the public and private sector, there is only going to be an increased need for professionals with the relevant CISSP skills. So, if you can get ahead of the game and look into this now, you are almost guaranteed a secure job future.

The qualification itself is extremely well-known and respected, meaning that whichever IT job you go for will look at this with great interest, whether or not the job you apply for is directly related to your CISSP training or not.

Obviously security itself is important, but it has never been more important than now. With the ever-growing threat of online hacking and crime, security systems have to stay top-notch and be constantly updated to stay ahead of the irresponsible sector of the online community determined to disrupt anything they can.

The recent spree of hacks on major companies such the attack on Sony’s PS3 games console community, only goes to show the kind of era we are moving into – one where security of all kinds will become even more important for businesses, industry and even the government to stay afloat.

So if you can offer your services to this particular area, you can be almost sure to find job security in a very high paying job. The CISSP courses are a great foundation to build a career in IT, and at very low cost, the course can work out as an incredibly useful addition to your work experience, for any employer.

Succeed in a Non-Linear Career Path

Doing this is undoubtedly challenging and risky, but at the same time really rewarding. It equips you with all-rounded work experience and a unique blend of skills that allow you to further your professional practice and manage your career more effectively.

This has become the new job market trend since the economic crisis hit. Professor of Management at the Wharton School, Peter Capelli stated that “What we see now are more ‘herky-jerky’ careers. People stay in jobs during the recession a little longer than usual, and then when they move, they don’t necessarily move in predictable ways”. Given the fact that jobs are no longer stable enough to guarantee a steady income and good quality of life, you need to be able to explore and assess alternative choices instead of relying on a ‘job for life’.

Other professionals also claim that a “squiggly” career seems to be more appropriate for the younger workforce today. In fact, in his book, Ctlr Alt Delete, Digital Marketer, Mitch Joel says that in order to succeed you need to be willing to embrace change adapting to challenges and opportunities just like a businessman. This means that you need to become more self-reliant and learn how to use planned happenstance effectively..

The one thing that’s certain is that success isn’t linear, and this is evident in the business world. Very few people know exactly what they want to do in their teens and this no different for many of the world’s most successful entrepreneurs. If you look at Steve Jobs and Mark Zuckerberg, both left school to go after their passion practically blind, tossing the traditional trajectory of their academic career in the bin. All they had at that point was an idea that could only help them land their first job – or startup. After that, their road to success and riches was full of bumps, a series of failures and disappointments.

But along the way that’s how you learn. Such experiences make you the person you aspire to be and force you to make adjustments to help you fulfill your career aspirations. In this regard, going against the grain isn’t a guarantee of success and although seems to be risky it’s something that’s worth trying. It will help you find what your professional self is made out of, embrace your weird quirks and allow you to work your way up to the top.

So strive to make a difference by not following a linear career trajectory. Be open to changes to bring evolution, challenge yourself and be willing to change your career to an entirely different one if need be. Provided that you have strong networking and transferable skills; the skills you can apply to a variety of professions and situations, you too can lead a successful non-traditional career.

Remember that your career path will be unpredictable, but this is a good thing. Life has its own twists, ups and down, the fact which makes it impossible for you to foresee and prepare accordingly. The one thing you can do though is make the most of what life gives you in any situation. Your ability to identify opportunities that match up to your passion will help you move forward chasing after what you want from your career.

Financial Recruiters

The first step to doing their job involves meeting with the employer to discuss the position that they need to fill along with the qualifications that they are looking for. The financial recruiter can also help to develop the job listing if the employer want to advertise the job opening. They may also meet with the staff in human resources to discuss the job description. Using all of this information the recruiter can use a number of resources to help them locate good interview prospects.

One source that a financial recruiter can use to find prospective employees to find the job position would be resume-listing networks and sites. They can review these periodically to find good employees. Even if the company the financial recruiter works for does not have a certain job opening to fit a potential employee that is looking for work they may establish contact with them and form a relationship in case a job fitting their qualifications becomes available. When a financial recruiter can also work with the resumes that are kept on file at the company they are working for when looking for a prospective employee. They may also work with various staffing agencies. A recruiter can also involve having to attend job fairs. They can also reach out to talented employees to see if they would be interested in changing employers.

When working independently their clients may give them a time limit on finding prospective employees to fill their job openings to encourage the recruiter to find employees in a reasonable time frame. It can be the job of the financial recruiter to pre-screen those who could be appropriate for the job opening and then present them to the client for further interviews. When working for an employer using a financial recruiter can save them time and allow the employer to dedicate their resources for background checks and more detailed interviews with prospective employees. Some recruiters may have access to more resources than a company would so this will increase their chance of getting the best employee for the job.

Systematic Approach to the Process of Training

To be successful, firms have to adopt a systematic approach to training process. Training fills the gap between what someone can do and what he should be able to do. The first aim of training is to ensure that, as quickly as possible people can reach an acceptance level in their jobs. Training then builds on this foundation by enhancing skills and knowledge as required to improve performance in the present job or to develop potential for the future. Steps involved in systematic approach of training:

Identifying and analyzing training needs: Training should always fall in line with the objectives of the organization to be achieved and it should be relevant to the context.Running training programmes just for the sake of running it, without defining the purpose, or sending the trainees for a workshop that has nothing to do with what the trainees really need to learn -all these are inappropriate methods of training and it makes the trainees lose their focus and direction. Another problem you will meet in the off-the job training is that, transferring the knowledge to action in the work place. If the objectives are not specified and appraised properly to the trainees, they will not be able to satisfy your expectations. So, a thorough analysis of what people need to know as trainees at different functional levels proves useful in saving much time and labor of the firm.

Job analysis-a basis for identification of training needs: The basis for training starts from job analysis, where the organization has to be quite prudent about its specifications and expectations well defined. The indicated specifications may be about,

  • Knowledge -what the worker needs to know in terms of professional, technical, technological, commercial aspects.
  • Skills-Manual, intellectual, perceptual, analytical or social which depends on the nature of the job. A top level employee needs to possess more analytical skills backed up by rational thinking, whereas a lower level employee is only expected to deliver his technical skills properly.
  • Attitudes: The disposition to behave or to perform in accordance with the requirement of the work. This is one of the most important aspect that is neglected by most of the organizations by sheer oversight. If a customer is not properly received in a boutique shop or a restaurant, think what will be the response and reaction of the customer? If a worker does not pay due respect to his superior or boss, is he going to continue working for the firm? Whether it is a production environment or a market environment, firms must teach the trainees to conform to the guidelines regarding attitude.

Prepare your training plans based on the objectives: Decide on the content of the course, as established by job and task analysis and information from performance appraisals. Decide on the training techniques, which may be,

  • Job instruction
  • On-the -job training
  • Coaching
  • Lecturing
  • Computer based training
  • Action learning
  • Interactive video etc., which are a combination of on- the job and off-the job training exercises.

Implementing training plans: The duration of the training course depends upon how much learning has to take place. It is essential to put someone in charge-a professional training officer or a designated manager.

Evaluation of the training process by monitoring and analyzing the results: How far the objectives have been achieved, indicate the success rate and also feedback for suggestions from employees’ end is a vital input for improving the performance output.

Navigate the Job Marketplace

Build Your Network

From the first time you set foot on a job site or in a professional venue where you have the opportunity to interact with construction workers, engineers, subcontractors, and others within your field, you need to focus on building your network. Develop potential connections. Get to know people. Whether you’re just starting out or you know you’re going to be changing jobs soon, building your network is the key to knowing what positions are open and getting your foot in the door.

  • Carry business cards. This may seem like a cliche, but it’s one of the best ways to literally get your name in the right hands.
  • Visit trade shows and talk people there.
  • Get to know the people who are coming to your job sites. You never know when one of them will be ready to offer you your next job.
  • Volunteer. Whether you’re just starting out in construction or you’ve been working in a specialized position for years, there are jobs out there that need to be done. Check out Habitat for Humanity in your community, donate your time to a local school that’s trying to get a building repaired, or work with local churches as they handle building mission trips. Contractors in your community are working there, too–and they’ll take note of your presence and the quality of your work.

Try to Leave on Good Terms

You know that your current job isn’t working out. Your superintendent has a bad attitude, your hours keep you away from your family when you most need to be with them, and the terms of the contract you signed aren’t being adhered to. No matter how bad it is, however, you want to make sure that you leave your current job on good terms. Give appropriate notice, try not to leave in the middle of a project, and keep your work ethic strong even in the last days of your employment instead of trying to “go out with a bang.” The construction and engineering communities in your city are relatively small, and burning your bridges with one company may make it harder for you to get your next job.

Build Your Skills

Both the construction and the engineering industries are experiencing a shortage of qualified individuals to take those open positions. That means that the more skills you have, the more positions are open for you. Taking the time to develop specialized skills will make it far easier for you to acquire a job in the future. Any time you’re on a job site, ask questions. While you shouldn’t walk away from your own work to watch or help someone else, being available and willing to learn new skills is the mark of a great construction worker–and those skills can be of immense benefit to you later.

Work with a Staffing Company

Staffing companies that are specifically dedicated to construction or engineering are a great first step, especially if you’ve been struggling to get a job or are afraid that you’ve left a bad impression on a previous employer that might be impacting your future employment opportunities. A staffing company can help get you a temporary or long-term position that could eventually turn into permanent employment, especially if you take advantage of that position to improve your network and reach out to other potential employers.

Navigating the job market can be frustrating, but it’s not impossible! By following these key steps, you’ll find the right job for you and improve your chances of being hired at the company of your choice. While it might not happen overnight, there’s a job opening with your name on it. You just have to find it!

First Rule of Marketing Yourself

The most immediate impact of these market changes became very evident to me when my client companies stopped hiring. Most of my business was in the manufacturing sector, and that sector was hit very hard by reductions in force, layoffs, downsizing, and many companies going out of business altogether.

Many workers who had been at the same company for decades found themselves suddenly and unexpectedly unemployed, and most of them had no clue about how to present themselves to other companies effectively in their searches for new jobs. Many of these workers were skilled, experienced, and very capable in their fields, but they were woefully unprepared for marketing themselves in the “new” economy where employers had the upper hand. I in many ways it was like what someone goes through when they have been married or in a long-term relationship for many years, and then become widowed or divorced. When they decide to get back into the dating game, they find that everything has changed, nothing is like is used to be, and the ‘rules’ of the game have changed dramatically. If they were married before the turn of the century, chances are that they know nothing about online dating, which is how more than one third of married couples in America today found each other. Online job search and marketing yourself through social media was a totally foreign concept to those who became unemployed in the economic downturn.

So here it is… the first rule of marketing yourself: When demand conditions change, you must also change your promotional strategy.

I jokingly tell my friends that as a recruiter, I’m really just “Cupid” for industry, introducing two parties to each other and arranging dates (interviews). If they kiss and get married (one hires the other), I get paid. However, I am well aware that my corporate clients judge me by the quality of the candidates I present to them, and the only way they get an impression of what they think of a candidate is through that candidate’s resume. Unfortunately, most job seekers still use the same, tired, out-of-date resume style and content model that was common in the years prior to the economic downturn. To make matters worse, most universities today are preaching to their students and graduates the same ineffective model for resumes that they have used for years.

What’s the point here? The point is simple… if you are looking for a job, and not just any job, but the job that you really want, you have exactly one opportunity to make a good first impression. That opportunity lasts about 6 seconds, the amount of time it takes for a recruiter or hiring manager to determine if your resume is one worth serious review or if it is thrown in the trash, literally or electronically.

You cannott get hired unless you get an interview, and you will not get an interview in today’s market unless you have a great resume that gives the recruiter and/or the hiring manager what they want to see.

Benefits Of Company Training

A good training can greatly improve the productivity of your employees. Because they would be learning new skills that they can apply to their jobs. And also they will learn new processes or techniques to help speed up their tasks and get the job done more efficiently. Take a graphic artist for example. If he undergoes a training program for the software he is using then he would learn new tricks and techniques to let him finish his tasks faster and also to make more effective designs.

A training will enhance the confidence of your employees. This is more for the newly-hired employees or those that are just in their first jobs. Because they are often the people who are not yet fully confident with their work or of their skills. Now you will be doing them a favor if you have them undergo such a training, but above all, your business will also benefit greatly because now you will have fully confident employees working for you.

A quality company training will help motivate your employees. It is natural that sometimes employees would have low morale when it comes to their work. Perhaps it’s because of the pressure of their jobs or that the have been some major changes within the company that affected their feelings or how they work together. Now if you have them go through a motivational training or seminar then you can fix these problems and have them feeling great again with themselves and their work.

Corporate trainings can also prevent people from leaving your company. Some trainings can help them look at the different sides of their jobs. And since they are given new skills, they would be glad that they are acquiring skills that they could use both at their work and also outside the office. Also if you notice, the people who quickly leave for another job are those who are either not enjoying their work or that they are not skilled enough so they are having a hard time accomplishing their daily tasks.

Finally, you can get your future supervisors or managers out of the current rank and file employees so it is important that you train them the soonest time possible. That way they are well prepared should they need to go up the corporate ladder.
