Job seekers get frustrated in there search because they don’t know what to look for.
Too many professionals read job postings, but don’t know what the hiring manager is truly seeking in a candidate. Many times the job seeker doesn’t receive the response they want from hiring managers because they lack the knowledge, skills, education, or experience.
Before you apply for another position, you need to ask yourself the following questions:
- Do I have the experience that this position requires? – Job postings will have the minimum years of experience the candidate must have. If the employer asks for 5 years of experience and you are a recent college grad, or have 3 years of experience, then you will not meet the requirements of that particular job, and you will waste of your time and effort to applying for the role.
- Do I have the education or training the position is asking the candidate to have? – The job description will indicate the education level the company would like you to have (i.e. high school diploma, some college, bachelors’ degree). If you did not graduate from a university or college and this is the minimum requirement, then your chances of getting an interview are slim to none.
- Are you qualified? – Job postings will have the required qualifications that will be considered for the position. Some postings will list 3 or 4 required skills while others may list 10+. Read this section carefully. This area of the posting will provide keywords to include in your resume, and will also provide you with the list of responsibilities that you will be expected to complete if you are hired. Your resume should highlight achievements in most of these areas. If not, then the hiring manager will not consider you the right candidate for that role.
Accurately reading a job description is imperative. If you don’t then you won’t get an interview. Don’t waste your time applying to positions when your skills, education, and/or experience do not meet what the posting is asking candidates to have.
